Professor Margaret Sheil, Chief Executive Officer, Australian Research Council will speak on the topic of "A new ERA for the ARC and the National Innovation System" at the annual TGH Jones memorial lecture on 6 October 2008. 

Professor Sheil will provide an overview of some of the most recent developments at the ARC and in research and innovation policy more generally.  The particular challenges and opportunities facing chemistry and related discussions will also be highlighted. The T.G.H Jones Memorial Lecture is an annual UQ Public Lecture established in honour of the late Professor T.G.H Jones, a member of the academic staff who gave extraordinary service to the University and the Department of Chemistry over a 50 year career.    On 8 October, Professor Robert B. Gennis of the Department of Biochemistry, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will present the Australian Academy of Science Selby Travelling Fellowship Public Lecture.  Professor Gennis, an Honorary Professor of SMMS, will speak on the topic of ‘Heme-copper respiratory oxidases: energy-generating molecular machines’.  Professor Gennis is one the world’s leading scientists in bioenergetics with a superb track record in research, having authored more than 300 publications. Selby Travelling Fellowships, financed through the generosity of the trustees of the Selby Scientific Foundation, are awarded to distinguished overseas scientists to visit Australia for public lecture/seminar tours and to visit scientific centres in Australia.
