Professor Michael Jennings is the winner of a 2008 UQ Award for Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision.

Professor Jennings’s research centres on bacterial pathogens such as Neisseria meningitides that causes meningitis and septicaemia. In 10 years at UQ he has supervised to completion eight PhD candidates and has four currently under supervision. He encourages his students to become immersed in the field of research early, enabling them to attend conferences very early in candidature. Another innovation is the involvement of senior PhD candidates in the supervision of honours students, and responsibility for operational and collaborative roles in management of the laboratory’s various research programs. Professor Jennings said that he empowers students to take charge of their futures. “While theses and reports are important, I emphasise a publication focus and encourage students to publish as much of their research as possible along the way”, said Prof Jennings. “This stands them in better stead to snare the jobs they want while also allowing them to benchmark against the best international standards.”
