More than 30 industry partners joined their SCMB staff colleagues for a School-sponsored breakfast at Hillstone, St Lucia Golf Links, 31 May.

Participants from private enterprise, government and schools were welcomed by Head of School, Prof Melissa Brown, who showcased SCMB's research and teaching activities and encouraged attendees to explore opportunities for collaboration.

Dr Leigh Ward, a long-standing member of the biochemistry staff of the School, and Mr Greg Brown, CEO of ImpediMed Ltd, gave an inspiring presentation on how research into bioelectrical impedance anlaysis has led to a product that helps treat lymphoedema, a swelling condition often suffered by those undergoing cancer treatment.

From a  prototype developed in Assoc Prof Ward's laboratory in the late 1980s, to commercialisation by UniQuest, to a company listed on the stock exchange and penetrating the US market, development of instrumentation to detect lymphoedema in its early stages has delivered benefits to UQ's research performance, financial benefits to investors and, most importantly, benefits to patients.  Read about how the technology has won an international 'life changing' award here.

The well-received breakfast event was followed by a meeting of the School's Industry Advisory Board.  The Board discussed effective models for undergraduate student placements in industry, strategies for better informing students of potential career opportunities, and surveying alumni for which aspects of their degree were most helpful in their career.

Prof Brown said that the industry breakfast would likely become an annual fixture on the School's events calendar.

"It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to build on existing relationships and to establish new ones with our colleagues in industry, government and schools", she said.

"We are very much looking forward to working together with our stakeholders towards mutually beneficial activities in education and research."
