:: Brisbane Surface Analysis Facility

The Facility

The Brisbane Surface Analysis Facility (BSAF), established in 1982, is a major materials characterization centre for industry, universities and R & D laboratories. BSAF has an established reputation for solving a wide range of problems in just about every field of materials science.

Applications

Some areas in which BSAF has provided answers in recent years include:

  • polymers metals and semiconductors
  • corrosion coatings and thin films glass
  • ceramics discolouration
  • contamination adhesion problems

Techniques available

  • X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS, or ESCA)
  • Secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS)
  • Scanning Auger microscopy (SAM)
  • Scanning probe microscopy (includes AFM, STM)

Facilities available

  • Kratos Analytical Axis Ultra X-ray photoelectron spectrometer
  • Bruker AXS D8 Advance X-ray powder diffractometer with multi-sample changer
  • Bruker AXS D8 Advance X-ray diffractometer with Göbels mirror and reflectivity stage

Sample requirements

We offer rapid sample turnaround and in-depth consultation. The facility has a solid reputation in the academic and industrial research communities for high quality service. While the focus is on serving researchers from UQ, users from QUT continue to use the facility for one day per week and approximately one day per week is dedicated to work for industrial clients. The instruments are all heavily subscribed.
