:: Primary and secondary school activities

There are a number of activities available to school students and teachers interested in Chemistry and Molecular  Biosciences:

Secondary School Students and Teachers:

The Siemens Science Experience

Three days of science and technology activities at UQ  for Year 9 students entering Year 10.  Normally held towards the end of the Christmas school holidays.  Participants perform experiments, meet and hear university lecturers, and experience what it is like to be on a university campus.  More here.

Experience Science

A chance for Years 10-12 students to attend university lectures and a choice of hands-on workshops facilitated by expert staff.  Offered in the school holidays each July.  More here.

Enhanced Studies Program

High achieving secondary school students can extend their studies in an area of interest and ‘test drive’ university life. Students accepted into the program can study one course (subject) during Semester One of Year 12.  More here.

Queensland Academy of Science, Mathematics and Technology

Toowong Academy is partnered with UQ.  Students have the opportunity to attend a practical experience in their first weeks at the Academy, taking in chemistry, as well as biomedical science, biology, physics and maths.

Microbiology Teacher Workshop

A workshop for high school science teachers and laboratory assistants, usually held in February, and arranged via the Science Teacher's Association of Queensland.  Enquiries may be directed to Mrs Elwyn Oldfield, e.oldfield@uq.edu.au.

RACI Titration Competition

The Royal Australian Chemisry Institute annually conducts regional competitions, culminating in national finals.  Chemistry at UQ has been a venue for regional competitions for nearly 30 years.  More here.

A visit to the UQ campus

UQ opens its doors year-round to schools, individuals, families along with small and large groups of visitors. To take a free guided walking tour of the campuses, please contact the UQ Student Recruitment Team via student.recruitment@uq.edu.au or on 07 3346 9649. Making contact prior to your visit will allow us to organise an experienced tour guide for you. Tours generally take about an hour and can be arranged during business hours either during the university semester or during the school or university holidays.

And don't forget UQ's annual Open Day, normally held late July or early August.  There is always a big science display.  Details are advertised widely in the lead-up to the event.  Some photos from the 2009 Open Day chemistry and molecular biosciences display are here.

 Primary School Students and Teachers:

Scientist-in-residence program

The Scientist-in-residence program brings a UQ Science student or staff member into the school on a regular basis to collaborate with teachers on science lessons and activities.  More information on the scheme is available here (link temporarily disabled - direct enquiries in meantime to Faculty of Science Engagement Unit).

Dr Steve Barker of the School of Chemical & Molecular Biosciences is a scientist-in-residence at Durack State School.

UQ Open Day

Held annually each late July or early August, UQ Open Day offers displays and activities of interest to the whole family, including primary school children.  Watch out for advertising in the lead-up to the event or check the UQ home page from July.  Some photos from the 2009 Open Day chemistry and molecular biosciences display are here.
