The eighth annual SCMB Research Students Symposium held November 2012 has been hailed as one of the most successful to date, according to Head of School, Professor Melissa Brown.group of smiling students

The symposium, held on The University of Queensland's St Lucia campus, attracted over 200 registrations from MPhil, PhD, Masters and Honours students.

Over 60 posters were presented, and students were selected on the basis of submitted abstracts to give oral presentations.

The day, which also included scientific equipment supplier displays and participation by a number of learned societies, was concluded with a fascinating talk from guest speaker Professor Hugh Possingham FAA, Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions and the NERP Environmental Decision Hub .

Professor Possingham spoke about the importance of scientists' engaging with the public to explore the impact of their research.
